Paulding- The Paulding Light

The Jist- A mysterious light out in the middle of the woods. The legend goes that this is the ghost of a railroad brakeman. The light changes colors and moves. Quite a bizarre phenomenon that happens very frequently.

Directions- Take Hwy 45 north out of Watersmeet about 5 miles. Take a left on Robbins Pond Road. Follow this road to the dead end. Park and look north for the light.

Stories- The Paulding Light, Ghostly Phenomena in Michigan's U.P.

Field Report- HGC had the opportunity to visit the Paulding Light years ago when we were just starting out. Back then, it was much more about the thrill of the hunt as opposed to investigating and relaying that information to our peeps. Unfortunately we don’t have any evidence to share, just our word which is our bond.

We got to the end of the road and in the parking area around 10 o’clock at night. We were happy to see we had the place to ourselves. I remember it being a little chilly for a summer evening. It didn’t take long for the show to begin. The lights danced in the distance. At one point, we could understand why people would think this was the ghost of a railroad worker. It looked as though a large narrow light with a different colored and smaller light slightly above it moving back and forth.

One thing we want you to understand is that this place is out in the middle of nowhere. You are literally surrounded by trees. At night this place is pitch black, which really makes that light vivid. It truly is something to see, whatever the causes for it are. If you are looking for some thrills and chills, the Paulding Light will deliver.

As hard as it is to admit, being two grown men, we couldn’t muster up the courage to walk towards this thing any more then a couple hundred feet. The isolation, darkness and pure spookiness of the location relegated us to being mere casual observers.

In retrospect, we do believe that the traffic of the nearby highway may play a significant role in producing the lights. It may be the skeptic in us, but we can’t confirm nor deny that there is something supernatural going on here. We ask you to be the judge on this one.

HGC Rating- Possibly Haunted
